Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, Thursday, March 18, 2021, that the UAE has not canceled his visit, and that he will visit it “soon,” after he had to postpone his trip to Abu Dhabi for the second time in a row in a week.
Netanyahu told the Israeli Army Radio: “They did not cancel the visit, there was a defect, and I promise to visit the UAE soon,” while he did not explain the nature of this defect.
This comes after Israeli media reported, on Wednesday, from UAE officials that the visit had been canceled, out of a desire “not to interfere in the Israeli electoral affairs.”
Two postponements within one week
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu backtracked on a planned visit to the Emirates today, Thursday, saying that he had postponed the new timing, to be after the Israeli elections scheduled for March 23, 2021.
“I will not travel to Abu Dhabi before the elections, I will arrive there later,” Netanyahu said in an interview with the Israeli Army Radio (Ghali Tashal).
The newspaper “Israel Hayom” had previously said, on Wednesday, that Netanyahu was planning to visit the UAE, while the Israeli Channel (12) said that there was a state of discontent in the Emirates, that Netanyahu used the name of the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed, in his election campaign. .
The channel indicated that the UAE was surprised by Netanyahu’s statement, on Monday, to Army Radio, that bin Zayed “volunteered” to invest 40 billion shekels (12 billion dollars) in Israel.
This comes after he has failed Netanyahu Last Thursday, March 11, 2021, in the implementation of his planned visit to the Emirates, after tension with Jordan that resulted in preventing his plane from flying over the Kingdom.
According to information reported by the Israeli media from political sources, the reason for the Jordanian refusal came after Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II canceled the planned visit to the Temple Mount, after the Jordanian authorities violated the security arrangements agreed upon with Israel.
Normalization of relations
It is reported that Netanyahu had planned to visit the UAE more than once, since the announcement of the normalization of relations between the two countries, in August 2021, but he was keen to visit him during the last remaining period of the Israeli elections.
Following the cancellation of the visit, the UAE announced, on Thursday, the launch of a $ 10 billion fund to invest in Israel, according to a statement reported by the official Emirates News Agency.
The fund was announced after a phone call between bin Zayed and Netanyahu on the same day.
It is noteworthy that in mid-September 2020, the UAE and Israel signed a full normalization agreement for their relations, followed by dozens of agreements in the economic, trade, tourism, technological, health and banking fields.
