The Ukrainian army claims to have destroyed a unit of “elite” Russian soldiers after a battle that raged for more than 14 hours.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ 80th Assault Brigade said its troops stopped a Russian unit’s attempt to cross a highway in eastern Ukraine. Ukrainians have not named the town where the battle took place, although heavy fighting continues in Severodonetsk as Russia seeks to annex the entirety of Ukraine’s Donbass region.
“The enemy has not passed! The units of the 80th separate Parachute Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to inflict casualties on the Russian occupiers, fighting them to the east,” the brigade wrote.
The post said the Ukrainian paratroopers who engaged with the Russians were garrisoned in Lviv and fought a 14-hour battle with the Russian unit. The Ukrainians said they used NLAW grenade launchers to eliminate a combat vehicle and Russian troops.
At one point in the conflict, the Ukrainians said they realized they were fighting against the Pskov-based infantry division of the Russian Armed Forces, which “the Russian Armed Forces consider to be an elite,” the post said. .
The Ukrainian brigade also released a video of what appeared to be burning military equipment.
“Although this war has been more about high-caliber artillery duels, there are often powerful rifle fights,” the Ukrainian brigade wrote. “Our boys spotted the saboteurs and opened fire with automatic weapons, forcing them to retreat.”
The Ukrainians went on to say that their paratroopers garrisoned in Lviv gave the Russians a “warm welcome” during the fight, after which the Russian brigade was driven back into a retreat, “leaving a trail of corpses on their way through the forest. of their deaths.”
“The coordinated actions of the 80th Brigade artillery units finally inflicted a massive artillery strike on the enemy,” the post continued.
Last week, Ukraine claimed to have destroyed an entire Russian army in Izyum. Separately, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia lost 200 aircraft in the Ukrainian war, demonstrating the Russian military’s failure to gain the upper hand in the air war over Ukraine.
Western authorities estimate that some 15,000 Russians were killed during the invasion. Ukraine, meanwhile, claims to have killed 30,000 Russian soldiers.
Friday marked the 100th day of the war in Ukraine, which began when Putin launched an unprovoked invasion of the country on February 24.
